Independence Day Special – Tricolor Rice Recipe

Hi all,

I love doing theme based activities with my toddler, it keeps her engaged and she experiences new things almost every day. With the Independence Day around the corner, we sing jana gana mana while I play it on the Casio for her. To make her familiar with tricolor – I made this ‘Tricolor Rice’, and managed to feed her all the healthy stuff which she otherwise avoids! I chose the easiest recipe so that we could cook together. She in fact helped me quite a bit 🙂

Keep boiled rice ready in advance and just do the colours bit with your toddler, or you’ll lose his/her attention.

For saffron rice

2 tomatoes, pureed.

Asafoetida, a pinch.

Boiled Rice, 2 cups.

Readymade tomato puree – 1 tablespoon (optional).

Salt, to taste.

Red chilli powder, ½ teaspoon (optional for kids).

Oil, 2 teaspoon.

Cumin seeds, ½ teaspoon.

Puree the tomatoes. Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a wok, put a small pinch of asafoetida and cumin seeds for tempering.

Pureed tomato

Asafoetida is good for kids and helps in quick digestion. It also relieves chest congestion, and helps treating respiratory tract infections and cough. I added this to provide a different flavour to the rice and include healthy stuff in my kid’s diet.

Put the pureed tomatoes in the wok and sauté for a few minutes until oil separates. You can also add some readymade tomato puree to enhance the color and taste.

Add 2 cups of boiled rice in the wok. Mix and cover for a minute.

For Green Rice

Spinach, 1 cup, blanched and pureed.

Asafoetida, a pinch.

Boiled rice, 2 cups.

Salt, to taste.

Sugar, a pinch.

Oil, 2 teaspoons.

Cumin seeds,  ½ teaspoon.

Blanch the spinach in boiling water, and puree. Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a wok and add a pinch of asafoetida and cumin seeds for tempering.

Put the spinach puree in the wok and sauté for a few minutes until oil separates. Add a pinch of sugar to suppress the bitter taste of spinach, and make it pleasing for the kids.

Add 2 cups of boiled rice in the wok. Mix and cover for a minute.

For White Rice

Just temper the boiled rice with cumin seeds and salt… And you’re good to go 🙂

Present the rice in a single plate and garnish as you wish 🙂

You can also replace boiled rice with boiled pasta!

CleanCoconut Review!

Au Naturel is my new mantra! With the ever growing awareness on the hazards of using chemical skin products, I’m getting more involved and excited with using organic skincare products for myself. It’s a common knowledge that much of what we put on our skin gets absorbed into our body. Organic products are not only safe for us but for the environment as well. They focus greatly on consumer health and eco-consciousness. I personally love to indulge in skincare products that give me natural and healthy ways to nourish my skin without hidden ingredients. We are in a world where organic products are a full blown industry giving us more control of the quality and safety of the products we choose for ourselves. I owe to my skin as much as to any other body organ and I’m determined to make a wise choice. On this noble pursuit I stumbled upon CleanCoconut and I’m so glad. So here’s my journey of using CleanCoconut’s several products. I will be reviewing them gradually.

CleanCoconut claims to bring to us Natural Ingredients and No Secrets!

Our vision is to create natural, organic skin-loving products with safe ingredients for all skin types. We will continue to strive with heartfelt passion to create products for those with sensitive skin types. We spend an enormous amount of time and energy researching and validating our suppliers to ensure our ingredients are the purest and safest on the market.

We will NEVER use any:  Fillers, Parabens, Nanoparticles, Petrochemicals, PEG, Synthetic Fragrances, Dyes, or Phenoxyethanol.  We test our products on real people (thank you family and friends) and NEVER on animals.  We are made in Colorado and source the world’s purest natural and organic ingredients.  If we don’t put it on our skin, it won’t be in our products.

Today I’ll review Grapeseed Oil and Virgin Organic Coconut Oil in this post.

My Review:

I’ve been using Virgin Coconut Oil as a facial and body moisturizer as long as I can remember. I have used various brands over a period of time. CleanCoconut has proven to be of consistent quality, so I decided to give it a try. It’s about a month now and it didn’t even take that long for me to see positive results. It’s cruelty-free and makes me look beautiful. All thanks to the medium-chain fatty acids that protect and heal the skin at the same time.

I noticed my skin looks smoother and radiant! It also acts as a natural moisturizing cleanser so I use it to clean off my makeup and dirt at the end of the day. In the morning my face feels feather soft and hydrated. I have also started mixing a drop or two with my day cream, and sunscreen and my skin looks amazing! My husband was resistant to the idea as his skin is more towards oily unlike mine which is dry-normal, but I used it on him and he was impressed with how well it worked out on his skin and saved him from sunburns.

I would also like to share my story of developing bumpy skin around my arms during last winter. It somewhat looked like red rashes and visually doesn’t make you look flattering in sleeveless outfits. I tried a couple of things but nothing seemed to work out, until CleanCoconut – Virgin Organic Coconut Oil. I know it sounds like an advertisement but I can’t help. My skin condition is 100% improved and also noticed a brighter-looking skin. There is a huge quality difference between store bought and from CleanCoconut.  The quality encouraged me to use it in various other ways. I have been using the oil as a body cream post shower and as massage oil occasionally. As far as my hair is concerned they look healthier. Added bonus – my eyelashes have grown longer and thicker!

I also did a little experiment by adding the Virgin Cold-Pressed Coconut Oil with water in Neti Pot to do sinus rinse. It worked pretty good on me. I’m so glad to have a “drug-free” solution to it.

With all these wonderful experiences in hand I have started recommending CleanCoconut’s virgin coconut oil to everyone now because if you’re still not using it, you’re missing out a lot. For me coconut oil is fruit of youth and I urge you guys to give it a try at least once and see for yourself.

  • Abstinence from the local market. Expected to be floating on Amazon soon.

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil is extracted from the seeds of grapes, typically made as a by-product of wine-making industry. Grapeseed oil is primarily used for: cosmetics and culinary applications. This oil is not only extremely beneficial for inside consumption, but no less for external skin and hair applications. Always make sure that the oil is marked as food grade before consuming as few grapeseed oils are stabilized with chemicals for its cosmetic uses.

The all natural astringent properties allow the oil to be natural skin tightener and acne reducer.

Best part is where Wendy leaves you a small note giving you some useful tips and advice on how to use the product.  You will also find information cards on the products to figure out its benefits. This personal touch made all the difference for me.

The Grapeseed Oil came in a classical 4 oz amber glass boston round bottle with glass droppers. I really appreciate the packaging as it’s a safe, secure and convenient and can be recycled. The amber color provides UV protection for light-sensitive products making it perfect to store oils, essential oils, perfume oils and other liquids. It’s quite the choice for travel as it conveniently fits in your purse.

TIP: if leave in overnight, wrap hair with a towel.  This oil can stain a pillow case.

For Split Ends/Frizz

Apply a tiny amount between fingertips and rub on the frizzy hair or split ends.

My Review:

I was on a trip a month and half back and as a souvenir I brought back acne. Using grapeseed oil has helped me lighten those acne spots in a month’s time which is super cool. It also helped me control them there itself, much like the brand claims. My skin feels better hydrated and has improved my skin tone a notch up.

You know I love curls and have chemically got perms done. So my hair acts up frizzy and dry at times. However, with the use of Grapeseed oil it doesn’t get frizzy after a day’s wash. Hair texture is better now for sure as far as I can tell.

These days I’m integrating the oil into moisturizers, creams, sunscreen, lotions, lip balms, shampoo, conditioners and an assortment of other products. I love it’s light, sweet balsamic aroma. There’s absolutely no dearth to its uses and application. Grapeseed oil is an excellent base for homemade cosmetology remedies indeed. I love CleanCoconut Grapeseed oil. Exquisite quality and well-priced!

Importance of right food during pregnancy

One of the most important things to take care of during pregnancy is what you eat, what you avoid. Although, the weird cravings will be there, it is essential to make wise choices and adopt a balanced and nutritious diet, which is good for you as well as the baby. Choose a variety of fruits, vegetables as well as proteins and cereals in your diet; remember a pregnant woman needs about 200-300 extra calories per day than usual!

Once you’re pregnant, you need more calcium, iron, folic acid as well as a lot of protein to complete a healthy diet for yourself as well as provide the necessary nutrients for the baby. The nutrients that need to be included in the diet during pregnancy are:

Folic acid – It helps in increasing the production of red blood cells, and prevent birth defects in baby’s brain and spine, known as neural tube defects. Foods rich in folate are: lentils, nuts, peas, avocado, dark green vegetables, citrus fruits.

  • Calcium – It helps in the formation of baby’s bones and teeth. If the consumption of calcium is less, the body will extract the mineral from mother’s stored in her bones and give to the baby for building bones.
  • Protein — The body needs more protein to help build the organs of the baby, such as the brain and heart.

The essential food groups that should be included in your diet are explained below.

  • Fruits and Vegetables – Remember, ‘mother nature’ is your best friend and the gifts of nature including fruits and vegetables are the best source for necessary vitamins and folic acid.

  • Breads and Grains – Once you’re pregnant, you would need a lot of energy and the best source of energy are breads and grains. Whole grains ensure that you have the supply of essential nutrients such as iron, vitamin B, fibre and even some amount of protein.
  • Chicken, Fish and Eggs – Chicken, fish and eggs are extremely rich in vitamins and minerals. They are also a source of essential amino acids which are critical in formation of muscles during pregnancy.
  • Dairy Products – Dairy products including milk, cheese, curd, butter etc are a major source of calcium which helps in building strong teeth and bones, as well as ensure normal blood clotting, and muscle and nerve function.

Tan removal – Natural Remedies, DIY

The sun at this time of year is particularly bright and strong, so even a few minutes outside without SPF can damage our skin considerably. It can lead to unwanted skin darkening & tan as well. While some will revel in skin tan, others may be more conscious and would want to preserve their natural skin tone. To be honest, skin tan is just one thing, but too much sun exposure causes various skin problems like: wrinkles, acne, fine lines, age spots etc. To this end, it’ll be great if you apply high level SPF before stepping outdoors and maybe use umbrella. This post is for all those who suffer from skin tan no matter how much they try to escape. I’m one of those people who gets skin tan in seconds!

Now a day we have many promising skin lightening and brightening products available in the market. Most of us tend to go for quick bleach or de-tan facials or use products that might be loaded with chemicals. It’s important to consider carefully what product claims and what ingredients it has to offer. These options are not only expensive, but take toll on our skin in the long run. I personally rely more on natural homemade concoctions and it actually does better job on me than any processed chemical products.

So, today I’m going to share few of those super easy amazing homemade sun tan removal packs & scrubs that will help you achieve glowing and even toned skin.

Tan removal remedies

  1. Peel Galore
  2. Orange Mask
  3. Orange Lavender Body & Face Scrub
  4. Lemon Zesty Scrub
Peel Galore –

  • 1 tsp orange peel
  • 1 tsp lemon peel
  • 3 tbs raw milk

Make a smooth paste adding all the ingredients together. You can adjust the consistency by adding more peel powder if it’s too runny or add more milk if it’s too compact.

Once ready, apply the paste on your face/body. Let it dry for about 20-30 minutes. Now take some more milk and pat it over your face/body to make it little wet. Make circular finger movements and exfoliate for 1 minute. Be very gentle while you exfoliate and wash it off with tepid water. You can use this scrub pack thrice a week.

If you’re using dried lemon/orange peel powder, all you need to do is to add raw milk into the peel powders. But if you’re using fresh peels then you need to make paste in a mixer by adding milk to it, as required.

P.S. You can use both orange and lemon peel in the pack or any one of your choice. Make a small test on your skin before you try this face/body pack as it can be harsh for people with sensitive skin. You must avoid this pack if your skin has any aberration as it may aggravate the situation for you.

It’s one of the most effective scrub pack in reducing tan and gives you a golden glow.

  • Milk plays a very important role in maintaining the beauty of the skin and keeping many skin problems at bay. It has many skin benefits.
  • It’s excellent cleanser
  • shrink pores
  • good moisturizer
  • treats sunburn
  • makes skin supple and soft
  • great for improving complexion and gives radiant skin.

The Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra, attributed her smooth skin and beauty to a secret ingredient, and that is milk!

  • Did you know lemon peels are nutritional powerhouse and contains 10 times more vitamins than juice itself! It has sooo many health and skin benefits. However, I’ll stick to specific benefits relating to the topic.
  • It helps to lighten age spots, blemishes, acne scars
  • has skin bleaching properties
  • enhance skin’s clarity
  • glow and suppleness
  • Has antibacterial and antioxidant benefits
  • removes fine lines and wrinkles.
  • As we all know, orange fruit is one of the best source of Vitamin C, which is good for health and skin care as well. However most of the benefits of orange are in its skin as it has more vitamin C than the fruit itself, lying dormant beneath the skin peels. Hence, we should never discard the peels and make good use of it. Always wash, clean and dry the orange peels whenever you’re having them. Choose orange with thin skin.

Process of making dry orange peel powder:

Wash orange peels thoroughly and dry them in shadow till it loses all its moisture and turn crispy. Once all dried grind them thoroughly to make fine powder. Store the orange peel powder in airtight dry container. It stays good for a long time. Mine stayed for 2 years or maybe more than that!

You can include orange peel powder in various face and body packs and see the visible difference in you. Orange peel is pretty much a boon for our skin as it helps us combat various skin issues like

  • acne
  • dark circles
  • blackheads
  • tan
  • dark spots
  • patches
  • anti-aging benefits
  • reduce blemishes and scars.

It has natural bleaching agents that helps make skin visibly brighter. Using it with milk or yogurt gives you that extra glow and remove tan.

P.S. You can make lemon peel powder in the exactly same way as orange peel powder. The only difference is you need to peel or scrape off the cover using a peeler. We don’t need the white material underneath the lemon. All we need is the yellow/green part.

Orange Mask –

Here’s a super quick  face pack that’ll give your skin a brighter and smoother look.

You’d need:

  • Dried orange peel- 1 tbs
  • Yogurt- 1-2 tbs

Just mix dried orange peel in curd/yogurt and make a paste. Apply on the face and leave for 20 minutes. Wash it off with lukewarm water.

You can also make luxurious body and face sugar scrub using lemon and orange peel powder.

Orange Lavender Body & Face Scrub

  • Ground white/brown sugar – ½ cup
  • Orange peel powder – 1/4th cup
  • Orange essential oil – few drops
  • Lavender oil/Olive oil (Extra Virgin) – 2 tbs
Lemon Zesty Scrub –

  • Ground white/brown sugar – ½ cup
  • Lemon peel powder – 1/4th cup
  • Lemon essential oil – few drops
  • Lavender oil/Olive oil (Extra Virgin) – 2 tbs

Mix everything together in both the scrubs and keep it in a dry airtight container. Make them in small batches and do your own little experiment.

You can add some orange zest and lemon zest respectively for freshness in the scrub when you use them.

  • You can add few dried rose petals too. It’ll give out great aroma and is a powerful antioxidant, relaxing and tones the skin.
  • Basically olive oil is a hidden beauty secret. It’s hypoallergenic and great for sensitive skin. It also reverses aging effects, UV damage and is loaded with antioxidants and vitamins.
  • Lavender oil is suitable to most skin types, is one of the most versatile and multi-purpose oil. It provides overall health to skin due to it’s antiseptic properties and skin-healing benefits. It is highly soothing and also promotes tissue regeneration helping with anti-aging treatments.
  • Both brown and white sugars are used in facial and body scrubs as exfoliants because they are granular. Sugar is a natural humectant, meaning it pulls moisture from air into your skin. They contain glycolic acid which helps the skin cells to regenerate faster for a much youthful appearance.
  • Brown sugar is often used in facial scrubs as it has finer grains than white sugar. Plus it is high in vitamin B due to molasses, which is an antioxidant that helps to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. White sugar is used more for body scrubs. So you can make your own choice as per your needs.

Enjoy summer and have fun!

Nursing in Public made easier – Nursing Dress from Threads & Shuttles Review

Hey guys,

Being a new mother comes with many twists and turns in the name of responsibilities, health, hormonal changes, new roles, and of course, sleepless nights that never stop 😉 Amidst all this, breastfeeding is one of the most challenging roles. You go out to a mall after a long long time after you baby was born, and the baby feels hungry and demands to be breastfed. A new mother would either find a feeding room or a quiet corner and a stole to cover up. So much thought goes into covering up the breasts, because the number of stares she will get are innumerable.

Breastfeeding in public is still a taboo not just in India, but in many parts of the world. Covering up while feeding in public is a very normal instinct, no matter how uncomfortable a mother is. Also, this restricts the type of clothes most moms would wear. I could not wear dresses and suits while nursing. I only wore tops/ t-shirts with jeans, skirts and shorts. Until I discovered a very reasonable and trendy brand for nursing wear – Threads & Shuttles (T&S).

The brand Threads & Shuttles was started by Sapna Krishan, who was an instructional designer with IBM. Sitting idle after her baby was born, and realizing the need for nursing wear for NIP (nursing in public), she decided to launch T&S. They now have managed to add all kinds of nursing wear to their collection – short dresses, nursing covers, kurtis, tops etc.

Sapna also has her own blog which records the breastfeeding journeys of different mothers to motivate more of our kind across the world.

Thanks to T&S, I finally wore a dress after almost two years of breastfeeding my daughter. You can read my review of the dress here:

INR 1300 + shipping

Facebook page of Threads & Shuttles (Link)

It came in nicely packed with a ribbon wrapped around it…a perfect gift wrap.

The dress is a trendy design, with 2 discreet zippers on each side, for easy feeding. The zippers are covered with a flap, which makes it look like any other dress, and not just a nursing dress. With a fun bright print, I loved the color combination of bright pink and grey. A pure cotton dress, it is perfect for summers and absolutely comfortable.

 What works:

  • The material is soft cotton, comfortable for summers
  • The zippers are not noticeable and it doesn’t look like a nursing dress at all
  • The print is amazing with bright color and a catchy print
  • The zippers on either side make is very convenient to NIP (nursing in public). Even a new mom doesn’t need to hesitate to feed if she’s wearing this dress
  • It is a very affordable dress and solves double purpose of wearing a nice piece of clothing and nursing conveniently
  • The dress can easily be worn by non nursing mothers too. After all, it’s a cute dress 🙂

What doesn’t

  • The availability of the dress on any other website

My opinion about this product:

In my opinion, it is a must have apparel for a nursing mother, a lot more convenient than carrying a nursing stole, I feel. A wardrobe of a nursing mother mostly revolves around loose tshirts, front open tops, but a dress like this would be a nice addition. Also, it’s really value for money. A big thumbs up from my side for this!

UberSassy Sattu Parantha!

The process of preparing Sattu is ancient and is popular over a wide area of North India, particularly Bihar state. It is prepared by dry roasting Bengal grams. The traditional way of preparing Sattu involves the use of an iron vessel in which the grams are roasted in sand. Afterwards they are sieved and then ground to a fine flour.

It is one of the healthiest food on earth, and must try this Sattu prantha recipe that I’m about to share with you all. It’s packed with nutrients and is quite delicious. Tangy enough to tantalize your taste buds and is a wholesome meal. It can be served for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It has a tendency to make the throat go dry, so serve it hot with baingan/eggplant bharta, curd, chutney, pickle or sauce. Sattu can be easily available at any Indian grocery store. However if you cannot get it near your house, you can easily prepare it at home by grinding roasted chana daal/bengal gram to a fine powder.

So let’s gather our ingredients 🙂

Let us begin with step by step process for easy execution.

  • We will start with the preparation of the filling for this delicious tangy parantha. Mix all the ingredients mentioned in the stuffing section with sattu. Add one or two tablespoon water to make the stuffing moist, so that it’s easy to bind. You can do a small test by closing the fist with the stuffing and see if it stays in the place. Adjust the salt and other spices as per your taste palate.

  • Now we will prepare the dough. In a large mixing bowl, add the measured amount of wheat flour and salt. Mix them thoroughly together, and then add ghee/clarified butter- mix well. Make a dent in the center of the flour, pour a little water at a time, gather them together. Use your fist and knuckles to push and stretch the dough and knead it to a pizza dough consistency. We need a firm dough, a soft dough might be difficult to manage.

  • Going further to the next step, divide the dough into small portions about the size of a lemon, and shape them round. On a lightly flour dusted surface, take one ball, dip it into the flour and roll it using a rolling pin into a small circle. We do this to avoid the dough from sticking to the surface.

  • Place one or two spoonful of the sattu stuffing at the center of the rolled out dough. Bring the edges together to enfold the filling to form a smooth round ball and pinch off the excess dough, if necessary. Then, roll out nice and round paratha, about 5 1/2” to 6” in diameter. You can use extra flour while rolling the dough. However, use as little as required.

  •  Heat a tawa or a cast iron griddle/flat pan over medium flame/heat. Make sure the pan is evenly hot before you place the parantha. Cook the parantha evenly from both sides while applying oil or ghee/clarified butter on the parantha and the sides, to a golden brown color. One or two tablespoon of ghee should be more than enough or just spray to a coating for healthier option. Gently press the edges and top of the parantha with a flat spatula until parantha puffs up. This might take a little practice.

Serve it hot with baingan ka bharta, curd, chutney, pickle or sauce.

P.S. It’s a super food and helps with obesity, constipation, high cholesterol, constipation and lots of other stomach disorders. I can share a drink recipe on demand.

Hair fall is an issue that concerns everyone universally. This concerns become even more prominent post pregnancy when sudden hormonal changes cause serious amount of hair fall, to the extent that one feels she’s about to go bald. Also, we (the new mothers) are unable to spare enough time and follow a proper regime to take care of ourselves and our bodies. Hair and skin also bear the brunt of motherhood L Dry, lifeless, frizzy and falling hair is the eventual result. The stress of motherhood is so evident from each part of our body – top to bottom.

hair mask 3

My Review:

The hair mask has a creamy texture that easily spreads on the hair.

I’ve used this mask about 6-7 times, and it started working and showing magic just after 3 uses. Brought life to my hair, drastically reduced hair fall, brought back lustre and shine, much like the brand claims. To be honest, the first use made my hair slightly dry, so next time I kept it for about 15 minutes before washing to give it more time to condition. It made my hair soft, like I just came out of a spa!! The mask is hydrating and conditions well. I like the light fragrance of essential oils.

It is very soothing and calming for the scalp, and doesn’t irritate in this hot and itchy weather. I could not stop flapping and playing with my hair (*wink*), it felt so smooth and silky. Argan and avocado oil in the mask help reduce hair fall and helps condition, and tea tree essential oil helps cure dandruff.

I could never give time to myself, since I have a hyperactive toddler and a husband with similar traits. But this mother’s day, I made a promise to myself and my hair; to give myself these 15 minutes of pure bliss every alternate day, and a 2 minute shower daily (sshhhh :P)

What works:

  • Moisturizing and hydrating
  • Provides spa-like treatment with natural ingredients
  • Keeps dandruff away
  • Drastically reduces hair fall
  • SLS, parabens, mineral oil free
  • Big tub goes a long way
  • Since it has natural hair strengthening ingredients, it can be applied by all adults, not just moms

What doesn’t:

  • Abstinence from the local market

body wash 1

Shelf Life: 2 years

Directions for use: Squeeze the liquid onto your hands or a loofah. Lather and rinse.

body wash 2

My Review:

The body wash is a transparent gel, with a very soothing and soft fragrance – truly a “calming body wash”.

The geranium essential oil in it helps in balancing hormones (yayyy for pregnant women) and also relieves stress. With a toddler as hyperactive as mine I’m never at peace and here, this body wash works best for me. It lathers well, cleanses efficiently and washes off easily. It does not dry out my otherwise dry and flaky skin at all which by the way, no soap or body wash has succeeded in doing till now. With the MADE SAFE certification and my experiences with the brand’s baby products, I will not give a second thought before buying and using its products.

What works:

  • Soft and mild
  • SLS, parabens, mineral oil free
  • Subtle and natural fragrance
  • Pump dispenser allows only desired quantity
  • Doesn’t dry out my skin
  • Cleanses efficiently

What doesn’t:

  • Availability in local stores

Overall Rating:

Hair Mask: 4.8/5

Body Wash: 4.9/5

Wonder Hair: Argan Oil Hair Pack

Hey girls and guys 🙂

How are you doing??

To treat my heavily damaged, frizzy and brittle hair due to chemical treatments, I’ve been trying DIY treatments at home, scared to go to the salon again. Oiling, mixing different oils, using hair packs, I have tried them all. However, this particular oil hair pack suited me so well, making my hair feel like it I just took a hair spa; smooth like butter, couldn’t feel the frizz and repeated use improved the texture and reduced hairfall.

I’m going to share this magic recipe with you, the easiest recipe with just 3 ingredients.

2 tablespoons coconut oil (I recommend using extra virgin cold pressed coconut oil for all purposes)

2 teaspoons argan oil (Buy it here – Redolence)

3-4 drops of lavender essential oil (optional – I love it when my hair smell nice) (Buy it here – Redolence)

Melt the coconut oil using a double boiler, and mix in all the other oils. It will be a nice amber green color. Apply in on the length of your hair, and a little on the scalp too. I suggest covering it with a shower cap leaving it for the night, to help retain all the oils and let them work!

Argan Hair Pack

Wash your hair with a mild shampoo in the morning, and voila! You have your own home spa with the simplest ingredients and no fuss method.

And the best part about this pack, you can use it on your skin. It hydrates and moisturizes you skin and has anti ageing properties!

For hair loss and dandruff, slightly tweak this recipe – add peppermint and tea tree essential oils. However, don’t keep this oil pack for more than half an hour. Use it regularly, about twice a week, for a month and see the difference!

Let me know if these packs worked for you!

A Bed of Roses: Redolence Wheat Germ Rose Soap Review

Hey girls,

More reviews of organic products coming your way! 🙂

A lot of organic and ayurveda products are available in the market, making it difficult for one to choose and stick to. I recently got hold of “wheat germ rose” natural oil soap. I’ve been using it for some time now and trust me, my skin feels so soft. I regret that I’ve been using such harsh chemicals on my dear skin till now.

My skin is extremely dry and needs a lot of moisturizer during the day for hydration. But after using this organic oil based soap, I realized it was mostly due to the drying soaps and body washes I had been using.

Redolence 1

Redolence Claims:

Wheat germ rose has antioxidant properties, which helps the skin glow by retaining the moisture.

Redolence 2

Price: INR 249

Weight: 125 gms

Shelf Life: 36 months

The soap comes in a very neat brown cardboard packaging with plastic wrapper. The box has all the required details written on it, including the ingredients, price, and weight.

Online Availability: Facebook page of Redolence

My Review:

The soap is very soft and moist to touch, and only a small amount is enough for a single use. Hence, making it last longer. It has a very soft and natural fragrance of mogra essential oil which fills my washroom with the aroma. The color is natural with small generous pieces of dried rose. It cleanses well, with all the ingredients that are gentle on the skin and completely safe too, suitable even to be used on the face. The soap lathers well, without drying the skin and I would love to buy it again or try new fragrances and ingredients. Their charcoal soap is on my list for now!

Redolence 3

PS – My husband calls it the Choco Chip soap from the way it looks and he may not be wrong 🙂

What works:

  • Gentle on the skin
  • Natural fragrance on essential oils
  • No artificial color
  • Very little require for good amount of lather

What doesn’t:

  • Price could be a little lower
  • Starts to soften if left moist; hence may melt if not used optimally

Go Organic – “From My Garden” Skincare Products Review

Hey Friends,

After facing a lot of issues with my skin and hair, I realized I was using too many chemicals. And in pursuit of making the skin supple and hair soft, I was actually damaging them further. My skin had become extremely dry with all the natural oils stripped off due to continuous use of harsh chemicals in commercial face washes. My skin was patchy, full of blemishes, dull, in addition to being extremely sensitive and acne prone. One day I decided to get rid of pseudo-skincare products full of chemicals harmful in the long run, and literally tossed all the bottles in the bin.

I pledged to go organic, and also started spreading awareness on the benefits of using organic skin care products. Apart from saving one’s skin from torture, using organic products saves the earth from the torture too :), since these products are completely eco-friendly.

Two months ago, I started using homemade face packs and scrubs daily, instead of face washes (refer to DIY section for homemade face packs). But being a lazy person, I started looking for ready-made organic skin products. I always used to splurge on skin products and organic is my new-found love. I came across a Facebook page “From my Garden”, a home project started with the aim to reduce the exposure to potentially harmful chemicals that are directly absorbed by our bodies through our largest organ – skin.  Sonal who runs “From my Garden” spoke with me to understand my requirements and type of skin with patience and suggested the products suitable for my skin type.

I ended up ordering few skin and hair care products. I’ll review 2 skin care products in this post – Body/ Facial Wash cum Pack and Cleopatra Facial Mudpack.

Body/ Facial Wash cum Pack

Claims: It’s a gentle and mild daily wash for face and body, which is supposed to replace soap. It keeps the skin hydrated and doesn’t deplete it of its natural oils. It’s gentle and can be used on sensitive skin of adults and kids.

From my garden 1

Price: INR 500

Quantity: 120 gms

Directions for Use: Mix the required quantity of the powder with cold milk or curd, and form a smooth paste. Slightly rub on the face and leave it to dry (optional). It can also be used on the whole body, if replacing body washes.

My opinion about this product: I’ve been using this product for about a month now. My skin feels less dry, considerably less breakouts, and I can see visible improvement in the quality of my skin. Just a small amount is enough for a single use, and one bottle lasts quite a while. I strongly recommend this product if you want to get your skin’s lustre back and save it from further damage.

Rating: 4.7/5

Cleopatra Facial Mudpack

Claims: It helps reduce pigmentation, acne & scars, sun spots, tanning and also tightens the skin. It also cleanses, nourishes and exfoliates the skin.

From my garden 2

Ingredients: Sandalwood, turmeric, neem, rose, basil, gooseberry, brahmi, haritaki, fuller’s earth

Price: INR 500

Quantity:  180 gms

Directions for use: Make a paste with pure rose water, apply it on face and neck, and let it dry before you wash, for about 15-20 minutes. Use it on a gap of 3-4 days.

My opinion about this product: This face pack works like magic. You can see instant glow as soon as you wash it off. It has helped reduce acne and dullness on my skin. I’m positive it’ll help remove patches and pigmentation that has formed after years of sun exposure and not using sunscreen religiously. I love the sandalwood smell, and will definitely buy it again. However, it would’ve been great if the prices were slightly lower for both the products. Maybe quality comes at a price 🙂
